I miss the old days where Americans didn’t have to pretend to care about the big wogball tournament. The United States didn’t come close to qualifying to play in it from 1954 through 1986. Now that the national team usually at least gets there people and the media at least pretend to care.
I might have peeked at the results and standings in the Sunday newspapers this time around, but the Sunday papers pulled out of our area this spring. Looking at the results online is easier and faster, but I miss having that dead tree in my hands next to breakfast and coffee.
The US is not doing well. They have to beat Iran to advance to the elimination round on the 30th. They have not done that well against Iran. Soccer is a big deal in Iran. For them beating the Great Satan at tiddlywinks would be a really big deal. Another soccer win would be a riot.
As bad as the US is performing, it’s neighbor’s aren’t doing much better. Canada goes into its last pool play match having already been eliminated. Mexico goes into its last match against Saudi Arabia needing to win to advance. The Surprising Saudis also advance with a win. Costa Rica needs a win plus some help to advance due to very negative goal differential.
