I don’t follow baseball much, but the Oakland Athletics saga has piqued my interest lately. Their final homestead begins Friday. They will play next year as a lame duck team before moving to Las Vegas in 2025.
The WuFlu was not kind to Oakland. The last three seasons post WuFlu have seen 2.2 million people attend. The season before WuFlu, 2019, saw 1.6 million people attend. The team is so bad this year that they were eliminated from the playoffs in August, the first team to be eliminated.
While the team’s on field performance has gone downhill post WuFlu, attendance has been less bad each year. This year’s attendance has already exceeded 2021’s and barring a disaster should exceed last year’s by the middle of this ten game home stand.
