KSHSAA reclassification

The Kansas Board of Education released enrollment figures for September 20, which determines state funding of schools. The same numbers are used for grouping schools of similar size for activities by the Kansas State High Schools Activity Association.

The only direct change locally is Neodesha moving up to Class 3A for football starting next year. There is an indirect change in 4A affecting Independence, Labette County, and Coffeyville. Among the schools dropping to 4A are Lansing and Wichita Catholic powerhouse Kapaun-Mt. Caramel. Labette should stay in the 4A East with Lansing. If you look at a map of Kansas, you wouldn’t think Indy and Coffeyville could be stuck in the 4A West with Kapaun, but it has happened twice in the previous four cycles since 4A went to the current format.
