With less than three weeks to go until election day, there is not a whole lot of campaigning going on. There have been a few fliers in the mail, but not much else seems to be going on. It could be that way because most of the races have been decided and those that aren’tContinue reading “All quiet on the political front”

Neewollah starts today.
Independence’s 9 day celebration kicks off tonight with the stage version of Peter Pan. Tomorrow morning will feature a 5k and 10k race. A week after, the highlight will be the parade through downtown Indy. In between will be the Neewollah Queen competition and the carnival rides. It may not seem like a big deal,Continue reading “Neewollah starts today.”
Flee markets
Around here there are a bunch of antique stores that sell nothing but junk. They buy the junk at auctions that literally have to give the stuff away. Even when the economy was better, people could not afford to buy it. If you go by one of these places, flee.
Heat ripple
After this morning’s hard freeze that killed everything not under cover and some things that were, temperatures will climb back to the 80s for a few days. A much needed rain should bring temperatures back to the 70s. I will put the peppers back outside for now. Hopefully they can still grow enough to eatContinue reading “Heat ripple”
Cold snap
It did dip below freezing this morning, but there was no frost. That will not be the case tonight as the temperature is already below freezing and will stay that way until 10am the next morning. I brought in most of my plants and covered up the ones that were worth saving.
High School football ends this week.
Kansas high school football ends the regular season this week. Most of the local teams are looking good heading for the playoffs. Coffeyville will open at home and if they beat 1-6 Fort Scott on Friday, they will host a second playoff game if they win the first. Caney is in a similar position asContinue reading “High School football ends this week.”
Planting garlic
I will have to plant the garlic and walking onions tomorrow. There was going to be a short window between getting some much needed moisture and the first freeze of the year. It rained Thursday and Friday and Wednesday morning the low will be 20 degrees.
Frost Warning
The weather forecast calls for frost Wednesday morning. I may have to pull the pepper plants in for the night or cover them up depending on the severity. I am hoping just to cover them up since the week after calls for warm weather and Persephone Days don’t start for another month.
Weeding out the help, Part 2
At the bottled water company I worked for in Phoenix, we told our temps “If you can’t be productive,be busy. If you can’t be busy, look busy.”. One of the tricks we used was to walk around with a piece of paper in our hands like we were reading it. One of our temps caughtContinue reading “Weeding out the help, Part 2”
Old Man? Not just yet.
I got a message from a former coworker at my last job inviting me and some other coworkers for lunch. He said we could “do the old man thing.” I love to get together and shoot the breeze, but I ain’t old yet. Although by my family’s standards, I should be dead already. I willContinue reading “Old Man? Not just yet.”
