The cooler weather has allowed my okra, tomatoes and peppers to set. I should have something worth eating in the next two weeks. The beans have finally germinated and now the race to Persephone Day is on. I should get some of the early beans before growth stops, but it will be a small harvesr.

Official shortage
I missed Altoona-Midway’s home opener because of the 2:30 start time today. For me it was too late to stay up and too early to wake up. It turns out that was not the only game affected by the shortage of officials. Crest’s 8-man game with Chase County also started at 2:30. Until the WuFluContinue reading “Official shortage”
The almost official end of summer…
is not going back to school or Labor Day, but the 100 mile yard sale the weekend after. Hundreds of people between Independence, Coffeyville and Bartlesville put out their junk. Since this did not happen the last two years, there will be lots of buyers. Unfortunately, auctions and yard sales are becoming a thing ofContinue reading “The almost official end of summer…”
Urinal Delivery
I miss my Sunday ritual of going to the Woodshed in southtown, and reading the Sunday papers while eating sausage, egg and cheese biscuits. Unfortunately there is no longer a Sunday paper to be had in town. The Urinal dropped its Sunday edition in 2010, when it switched from being a daily to a threeContinue reading “Urinal Delivery”
Urinalism is spreading
The Parsons Sun and Chanute Tribune will no longer have the scores of the local football games in Saturday’s edition because the papers are being printed in Joplin, Missouri about 100 miles away. This means they appeared in today’s paper. Meanwhile, the Independence Reporter had a front page story about last Wednesday’s Wilson County ComissionContinue reading “Urinalism is spreading”
Official shortage
Altoona-Midway crushed Chetopa 46-0 in a game that ended midway through the third quarter due to the 45 point mercy rule in 6-man and 8-man football in Kansas. They will host Waverly in a game that will start at 2:30 Friday because of a shortage of officials. Southeast Kansas has not had the problems theContinue reading “Official shortage”
Fall cleaning
It has cooled off considerably the last two weeks, especially at night. Labor Day weekend means the start of fall cleaning, starting with taking the AC unit out of my bedroom window and putting the window fan in. Sometime between Halloween and Thanksgiving, I will have to close the windows for winter.
Train of thought derails
I get a lot of ideas for posts, but I forget about them by the time I get online. I have decided to start drafts I can finish later as soon as I get to reliable internet.
High School football is here
Tonight marks the beginning of high school football in Kansas. Among the games is the first regular season 6-man game in Southeast Kansas, Altoona-Midway at Chetopa. Chetopa has announced tonight’s game is free. Normally admission is 5 dollars. Yes I am going to see this.
I hate Mondays
The bad thing about working in retail is the schedule. Hardly anyone working in retail works 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. In my case, I start my week on Thursday night. At Walmart it’s always Friday for somebody, just not me tonight.
