None of the above

It seems our choices for President come down to a senile fool who couldn’t do more to destroy the country if he tried versus a grifting con man who failed to destroy the Sith when he had the chance. If there was a time for none of the above this might be it. Right now I’m leaning toward the con man, hoping he might disappear if we give him a couple of Ex-Lax.

Headcount day for Kansas

Today is a big day for Kansas schools. The student count on this day determines the amount of state aid each school district gets. It also determines which class high school sports teams will compete in for the next two seasons. Locally, Caney Valley could drop from 3A to 2A. The only other area school that might be affected is St. Paul which could drop below 50 students and choose to drop from 8-man football to 6-man.

Too bad the local media doesn’t cover this. With the rise in homeschooling, there could be an effect on local school district budgets.

Vacation Policies

When I first entered the workforce full time 40 some years ago most private employers had the same vacation policy. You got one or two weeks vacation each calendar year, pro-rated if you only worked part of a calendar year. You had to use it or lose it at the start of the next year. Vacation policies have become more flexible in recent years.

Wally World allowed you to carry over 80 hours of vacation and an unlimited amount of personal time over each year. Anticipating hard times coming, Wally World has trimmed this policy back considerably. After the end of the fiscal year, January 31, associates can only carry over 80 hours of personal and vacation time combined.

They still allow you to cash out excess time each year. Since I don’t get that much time off each year, I prefer the time off. Under the old plan, I could have kept all of my time. Under the new plan I would get cashed out for a couple of days of vacation. I just put in for an extra day off for my scheduled vacation at the end of the month. I will probably take off a couple of days off in December as well.

Amazon days

Back in the days when Amazon was selling mostly books, they opened a warehouse in Coffeyville.  Amazon insisted on a high school diploma.  They didn’t just want you to have a diploma, they wanted to see the actual diploma and make a copy of it.  Most middle aged Americans have no idea what happened to their diploma.  Some graduated from schools that no longer exist.  Fortunately for Kansas high school graduates, the Kansas Board of Education has an archive that can prove high school graduation.

More softball and hardball

This week the Kansas high school sports authorities allowed an increase in the number of baseball and softball games per season from 20 to 26 starting this spring. This will put Kansas equal to Missouri but considerably behind Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Colorado.

This is a boon to large suburban schools which are losing players to club teams. Small rural schools won’t benefit as much because of a lack of depth and lack of opponents.

A’s last stand

I don’t follow baseball much, but the Oakland Athletics saga has piqued my interest lately. Their final homestead begins Friday. They will play next year as a lame duck team before moving to Las Vegas in 2025.

The WuFlu was not kind to Oakland. The last three seasons post WuFlu have seen 2.2 million people attend. The season before WuFlu, 2019, saw 1.6 million people attend. The team is so bad this year that they were eliminated from the playoffs in August, the first team to be eliminated.

While the team’s on field performance has gone downhill post WuFlu, attendance has been less bad each year. This year’s attendance has already exceeded 2021’s and barring a disaster should exceed last year’s by the middle of this ten game home stand.

Ain’t buying it

You know people are hurting when they aren’t buying groceries at Walmart. Our holiday displays are in the backroom waiting to be put up. Unfortunately there is a lot of summer groceries that didn’t sell so well, so there is some serious clearance sales. Red, white and blue M&Ms were half off at 6 dollars. Hershey smores chocolate bars were almost half off and so were the Honey Graham crackers they went on. Cheez-it two pack crackers were half off as well.

Most of these displays are gone in a day or two, but these had been there almost a week when I left for the weekend and will probably be there when I get back.

Putting the duh in dumb blonde

Michelle Lujan Grisham, Governor of New Mexico, issued a temporary ban on carrying handguns in Bernalillo County including the city of Albuquerque. The rationale is “public health” because gun violence kills two to three children a month.

This executive order has not exactly gone over well with the public. In addition to the usual fringe members of the opposition calling for her impeachment, the Bernalillo County District Attorney has already said his office will not enforce the order. When you lose David Hogg on this issue, that makes it a dumb blonde moment.

Lying down on the job

My job can literally be a pain. Reaching up on the top shelf to bring boxes or cans is not so bad. Bending over to put things on lower shelves can be a bit awkward at times. But seeing what is in the back of the bottom shelf preventing you from stocking an item can be a real pain in the back. The most effective way and the least painful involves lying down on the floor so your eyes are parallel to the shelf. But at my age getting back up can be either slow or painful, depending on how far behind I am.
