Jets win, host St.Paul Friday

Since ending their seven year losing streak five years ago, the Altoona-Midway boys basketball team has been competitive. After last night’s upset of Jayhawk-Linn, they will host a playoff game for the third time. Unlike previous years, they will get a week off before hosting St.Paul. The winner will play Lebo, the only team in the sub state with a winning record.

Four day school week

Over the last several years, some school districts are trying to save costs by going to a four day school week. This does not work in states that mandate a certain number of days of instruction, but does in stares that mandate a certain number of hours of instruction. Oklahoma and Kansas mandate a certain number of hours, so the four day week is possible.

Altoona-Midway is considering a four day week starting next year. There will be a town hall meeting in early March.

Getting old

I got another reminder I am getting old when my Social Insecurity statement came in the mail yesterday. I used to get them annually until I moved to Kansas. I tried to get them online, but was told I couldn’t. I found out that they will mail statements starting the year you turn sixty. When I saw the estimated monthly benefit for retirement at ages 62 through 70, I realized I was going to have to keep working a lot longer than I wanted to

Super Bore, Part three

At Zerohedge.com there is a story on super bore ticket prices. As of Thursday, there was a ticket available on a resale site for $3,087 dollars. The ticket was between the end zone and the goal line, upper deck.

At the first super bore, tickets were six, eight and twelve dollars. There was no resale market because the game was not a sellout. In Alex Hawkins’ book “My Story and I’m Sticking to It”, he recalls an article in the Kansas City Star about burglars breaking into the Chiefs ticket office and stealing cash and office equipment. They left a large number of super Bore tickets.

Vacation

At most companies, you can easily figure out how much vacation you get each year. It is prominently posted in the breakroom and other places each year. Not so at Wally World. It took me almost three years to find it online and print it out. At most companies, you get one or two weeks vacation after your first year, three weeks after your second year, four weeks after your tenth year, with five weeks after twenty years becoming less and less common. Larger companies may give you three to five days of sick time each year. Part time employees are usually shit out of luck as far as vacation or sick time go.

At Wally World, you get a fraction of an hour of vacation and personal/sick time for each hour you work. If you work full-time it is fairly easy to figure out your vacation time each year. Wally World is slightly below average early in your career, but if you stay ten years the leave time is above average. If you manage to stay 20 years, your leave time gets way above average with six weeks a year of vacation a year.

Some states have laws mandating more sick/personal time which usually cuts vacation time. Most companies have a “use it or lose it” policy on time off. Wally World does allow you to roll over some of your leave time each year and will even pay you for any balance over 80 hours at the end of the year, which is January 31 at Wally World. Overall, Wally World does try to compensate for low wages, but it is hard to make a living working here.

Winner

I went to watch Altoona-Midway’s homecoming game tonight. Girls got smoked 62-11. Boys got on the right end of a running clock and won 63-33. Whenever the margin in a basketball game gets to 30 points after the third quarter, the clock does not stop except for timeouts and technical fouls. I won the 50/50 raffle and walked away with 22 dollars, which paid for my night out.
