Although I have spacebook and twitter accounts, I rarely use them. Apparently spacebook and instagram went down today and I barely noticed. And because I work nights, I slept right through it all.
Bathroom Remodel
I got an estimate for the bathroon remodel on my rental property in town. A bit less than I feared, hopefully I can get it done this week. Between this and the new HVAC unit, the next tenant is going to get a serious rent increase. At least the property taxes did not go up too much this year.
Last Minute Planting
Today was one of the few days that the weather was great. The temperature barely reached 80, with a bit more rain than yesterday. I planted some arugula in a little used bed today. Frost should not be an issue, but Persephone Day may arrive soon. At that point all I will be getting is microgreens due to lack of daylight.
Baseball needs relegation.
In soccer the teams that finish on the bottom get demoted to the next lower league. This is known as relegation. With the Texas Rangers and Pitsburgh Pirates having lost their 100th game this week, they join the Baltimore Orioles and Arizona Diamondbacks in the 100 loss club. This is the first time that four major league clubs have lost 100 or more games in the same year. If there was a time to make a case for baseball relegation, this is the year.
Rain at Last
After 22 days of dry weather, we finally got about half an inch of rain. Not enough to add to my water storage, but enough to get the plants a good soaking.
End of the growing season
The radishes I planted two weeks ago finally came up. Tomorrow I plant Swiss Chard and Kale. Time to get the covers ready. Hopefully I won’t need them for a month, but I could get an early frost.
6-man football comes to Southeast Kansas
Sorry for not posting yesterday. I was planning to post the biannual reclassification list, but the KSHSAA did not release the numbers until today. 6-man football became a thing in Kansas five years ago, but did not have the required 24 teams for an official state championship. These teams were well west of Wichita with most being closer to Denver or Amarillo than Kansas City.
1A, the lowest 11-man classification had 27 schools, 19 of which could have opted to play 8-man football. The KSHSAA decided to cut 8 schools from 2A and 8 from 3A to keep 1A viable. They also wanted 6-man to have an official state championship, so a cap of 55 students in grades 9-11 was set to go with the current cap of 100 students in 8-man. Among the schools that chose to play 6-man were Altoona-Midway and Chetopa.
I only have to drive half an hour to watch 6-man football, but players at these schools are looking at some three hour road trips to fill their schedule.
Finally Footy
I haven’t posted much about footy this year. Having to drop my AFL TV package and my Geelong club membership has something to do with that. I also did not go to any Tulsa Buffalo games this year for the first time since they were founded in 2007. I hope this loss of interest is not a permanent thing, it’s just paying bills takes up most of my time and energy.
Early Saturday morning US Central time, the AFL Grand Final will be played. The AFL decided to hold the game Saturday night and to have it in Perth due to WuFlu restrictions in Melbourne. I will be watching the game since I have a four day weekend. Dogs over Dees by 15.
Fall At Last
Cooler temperatures have arrived, just in time for the official beginning of Autumn. Lows will be in the 40s for the next two days. There may be a few days left where it might make into the 90s, but it won’t stay in the 90s like it has been.
Attendance Day
Kansas K-12 school funding is based on attendance today. So is sport classification for high school sports. Surprisingly, schools used to make serious efforts to get kids in school on this day. Now they make no effort at all. By the end of the week, we should know what those figures were.
