For the first time in well over a year, the entire county is out of extreme drought status. Most of the county is in moderate drought, with the northwest corner in severe drought. The streams still lack water and the spring is dry, but Caney, Kansas schools will have showers and regular toilets when they return to school next week.

Black day after holiday
At Wally World we never got the big Black Friday crowds. But this morning we got the biggest opening crowd since we put the Halloween candy on sale half price. The Christmas stuff went out the door quickly. People are not going to pay the outrageous prices for non necessary food items. People I talked to said if we didn’t have this stuff half price they would not buy it. Either out of desperation or stubbornness, people are resisting. Retailers and manufacturers take note.
Back to work
After one day off for Christmas, I have to go back to work tonight. I get Wednesday night as my other night off this week. I should be more grateful I get a holiday off. The next two years Christmas will be baked into my normal weekend.
Wet Christmas
It has rained all day and will do so into tomorrow morning. After that, it will go back to seasonal weather with highs in the 40s and lows just below freezing. There may be a lot of water on the ground, but none of it has reached our stream and creek beds yet. Time to go to bed and get up early as usual.
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas to everyone out there. Time to make the donuts. After Christmas Eve services tomorrow morning, I will send most of my day off resting. If I don’t post tomorrow, no worries.
Winter Solstice
If it seems like the nights are too long, it’s because they are. But after tonight they will get a little shorter. I thought of celebrating with a bike ride to work tonight. The temperature is ideal at 60 degrees. But with rain in the forecast, it’s much safer to drive.

I always think of the old Merle Haggard song in December. Unlike the song, I still have my job. But with car insurance, property taxes, and my landlord license due in the next 24 hours, a large chunk of my bank account goes out the door in a very short period of time.
Christmas is just another workweek
I thought I would at least get an extra day off for Christmas. No, the schedule got adjusted. Instead of Tuesday and Wednesday nights off I get Sunday night off for my holiday, work Monday and Tuesday nights and get Wednesday night off. No sleeping in for me next week.
Winter is not all bad
Winter is cold, dark and dreary. But it makes it easier to get some sleep right before work. Around winter solstice it gets dark around 530 pm, giving me a solid three to four hours. If I get off at 651 am, the earliest I can get off of work, it will be light before I get home, even at winter solstice. At my age, four hours of uninterrupted sleep is hard to get.
