Cats had a rough weekend.

No, not the four legged ones, the ones in blue and white hoops. Not only did the Cats lose by two points to Sydney, but they lost longtime President Frank Costa.

When he and CEO Brian Cook took over at Geelong, the organization was in disarray. When Costa stepped down in 2010, the Cats had won their first flags since 1963 and were playing in a expanded and totally rebuilt stadium. Good on ya, Frank.

Birthdays are overrated

Waited up until 3pm for my cakes to arrive, so I didn’t get much sleep last night. Work seemed to drag, but at least I got it done on time. I was going to share my cakes with my coworkers, but a lot of them were scheduled off. Except for the mod squad, most of them should be there tonight.

Got a surprise this morning when the mail lady came and dropped off some plants from Territorial Seed that I had forgot I ordered. I got them into pots as quick as possible, since the weather is going to be quite warm for a while. I got a lot of yard work to do and may take a three day weekend since I have so much time off available.

Shift Change

If you shop at Walmart and hate dealing with people stocking shelves, senior management hears you. In five weeks, we are going back to do most of our stocking after the stores close. Some people are not going to like it, but avoiding 9-5 Mon-Fri is a must for me. Night stockers are dropping like flies this week, so if you know anyone who needs a job, Walmart is hiring.

Cats beat Swans, clinch double chance

Cats let an inferior Sydney squad hang around far too long in a 69-63 win this morning.  With one game left the Cats are locked into fourth place.

The eight finalists are locked in, but the matchups will be determined by the results of tomorrow morning’s game between Port Adelaide and Collingwood. If Port wins they will play the Cats in two weeks. If Collingwood wins or the game is a draw, Brisbane will finish first and will host the Cats.  Port would then be second and host Richmond. Collingwood will finish sixth with a win, seventh with a draw and will play St. Kilda either way. Lose and they will finish eighth and have to play fifth place West Coast, probably in Perth.

Finals start in two weeks, not good news for the Cats. Their record after a bye week is the stuff of legends. Not counting this year’s 9 day break, they have lost seven of nine in the regular season and their last three in the finals after a traditional 12-14 day break. Can’t make up this level of futility, nor find another team in any sport with this level of futility.

It’s not like the Cats are a bad team. They have the highest winning percentage in the league this century. You just can’t give a cat a break.

Nearing senility

All the talk about Joe Biden’s mental state promptec me to look up the ages of congressional leadership. The top three Democratic leaders will be 80 or older by the time the next Congress begins. Republican leadership averages 55. I wanted to include Senate leadership, but finding the information I needed in one place proved difficult. If Democrats keep the house, I hope some newer, younger leaders rise up.

AFL finals race heats up in last week.

The last round of the regular season starts Thursday morning. Four teams are fighting for the last two finals berths. St. Kilda plays Greater Western Sydney for one of them. Port Adelaide and Brisbane are guaranteed two finals games at home and a bye should they win the first final. Richmond, Geelong and West Coast are fighting for two guaranteed finals games with the odd team out guaranteed a home final.

Home is a relative term, since Victoria is under lockdown. Since finalists Richmond, Geelong, and Collingwood and contenders St. Kilda, Melbourne, and the Western Bulldogs are all Victorian based clubs, they can’t play at home.

Brisbane is unlikely to leave their home stadium this season, since the Grand Final will be played there. Port Adelaide is likely to play at home until the Grand Final. Where the other finals games will be played is anyone’s guess. By Monday night, things should be clearer.

Unexpected day off

At Walmart associates have a WuFlu questionaire to fill out online before work. I was about to fill out mine, when I realised I had today off. Got a little shopping done. I have to go to work early tomorrow to do some long overdue grocery shopping.

If I had tomorrow off like I thought, I could watch the Geelong-Richmond game Friday early morning. Or I could if I hadn’t used most of my 15GB of Internet already.
