Made the trip back from Iola yesterday and went right to sleep. Resting in my room today. Have to pack tonight. Need to leave early tomorrow to get the rent and go back to work.
Failing midterms
Rode 54 miles from Ottawa to Iola in a time much too embarrasing to mention. Got to do better tomorrow on the return trip, which will be slightly shorter because I went up and back on the initial stretch in Ottawa today.
First serious test
I am in Ottawa, getting ready to bike the Prairie Spirit Trail from Ottawa to Iola. I am leaving tomorrow morning, spending the night in Iola, and returning the next day. I haven’t done 30 plus miles on consecutive days, so this should be a good test for biking the American Discovery Trail as soon as I retire and my cat dies.
Decisions..
Decisions, decisions…
I don’t have a weekend next week, but have today and tomorrow off this week. Do I make my weekly run today or tomorrow. Looking at the weather, tomorrow appears to be better. The Cherryvale-Independence loop this week.
Next week, ride to the Little House on the Prairie Museum, which will be a nice 25-mile run. The TV show took place in Walnut Grove, Minnesota. The events in the book took place in the middle of nowhere, Kansas. Independence was the closest town, a visit to which would take all day.
Finally Footy
The Australian Football League restarted last weekend and the Geelong Cats pounded Hawthorn after three months off. Saturday they laid an egg losing a close match to a Carlton side that has not had a serious finals run this century. There is no excuse for the winningest side in this century to lose to Carlton.
Closer to home, the Tulsa Buffaloes started training for a week until someone had possible symptoms of Covid-19. Until test results come back, practices have been canceled.
Back to Wally World, with a detour
The road I normally use to get to work is blocked off for tne next three months. I stopped by the Little House on the Prarie Museum on way in. Looks like a good excuse for my next bike ride.
UPDATE…After just over two months, the road work has been completed. There is a left turn lane added for Cessna workers and the intersection got a fresh coat of asphalt. That means three fewer miles of dirt road to deal with.
Serious training ride
Ended my weekend with a 42 mile ride around the east side of Montgomery County. I had a little trouble getting used to the new tracking app from Under Armour. It works a lot better than the previous app from Strava. I forgot to pause the app when I was at the courthouse paying my taxes. But even taking off ten minutes, my time was the second worst ever. The worst was ten months ago, when I blew a tire and had to walk the bike the last six miles.
Back to Wally World tomorrow. My next weekend is Monday/Tuesday and I might try a run to the Little House on the Prarie Museum.
Back to cycling
This blog is supposed to be about preparing for biking the American Discovery Trail when I retire, but I haven’t been getting on the bike like I should have been. I finally rode to Coffeyville and back Friday (16 miles) and Sunday (14 miles).
Plan on heading east tomorrow. Would have left today, but got home at 0230 and decided to rest today.
Working Holiday
For the second time since 1983, I had to work on a holiday yesterday. The other time was New Year’s Day 2000. We were testing bottling equipment to make sure there were no bugs in our electronics and computer systems.
Too much Wallyworld, not enough bike riding.
I started this blog to post about the cross-country bicycle ride I had planned when I retire. Now the weather is decent, I am spending too much time at Wallyworld and not enough on the bike. My goal this year was to do the 57-mile Prairie Spirit Trail from Iola to Ottawa, Kansas. After eight days at work, I finally got a day off. I think I will go for a ride now.
