Paid Holiday?

The total compensation at Wally World isn’t too bad. What is abysmal is the holiday pay. Most people in the US get at least six paid holidays and nine or ten is becoming common. Retail and restaurants are the big exception. Paid holiday is a foreign phrase with no English translation.

Wally World has two holidays, Christmas and Thanksgiving, neither of which are paid. Since overnights take off the night before the holiday, this means the Thanksgiving holiday is on my normal night off. This gives me a normal work week that week. Christmas Eve falls on Sunday this year, Tuesday next year, and Wednesday the year after that. I can use protected time off to get paid for the holiday this year, but I have to decide by Monday evening if I want to do so. If I don’t, I will not get a paid holiday until 2026. At least that year Christmas will be a three day weekend.

Entitled Brats

The former soccer player best known for kneeling and whining has come out and said her job kicking a ball around was the worst job. Here’s a clue just for you Megs. Try cutting transformer tops with a chop saw. Too much dust for your respirator? Load trucks in Phoenix where the temperatures are over 100 degrees from April through October. Are you hot and bothered yet? I would have been glad to trade places with you even if I didn’t get your salary. And I certainly never bitched about my job where oil rig workers and coal miners could possibly hear it.

Life will be much better for you when you learn to get off your high horse and lower your nose parallel to the ground.

Snowvember

We were expecting a trace of snow but not expecting it to stick. This morning when I got off work I was surprised to find it had stuck to the roads. By the time I got home the roads were absolutely clear but the fields were not. The snow should melt today or tomorrow not helping the drought very much. The quarter inch of rain that came down before the snow might.

Finishing the garden up.

Sorry I haven’t posted for a month. I figure no one is reading it, so it wasn’t a big deal.

I am trying to overwinter my pepper plants, so I severely trimmed them back and harvested the very last of the peppers and a stray okra Tuesday. The timing was nearly perfect because it was my weekend and a frost warning was in effect that night. My Arugula and Swiss Chard are under cover and survived so far.

Today should be the last day above 60 degrees for quite a while, so I need to get out and do a bit of yard work. Tonight will drop below freezing again, so the covers have to go back up. Since Persephone Days begin today at my latitude, I will harvest them in the next few days.

Jack Frost is coming soon

Today will be the last warm day for quite a while.  Tomorrow morning I will have to bring in the peppers and the okra because by Sunday morning it should be below freezing.   By Wednesday the low should be around 20 degrees, too cold for covers to work although I might be able to save the greens in my cold frame if the mini greenhouse will fit over it.
