It snowed just enough to cover dirt roads, but not enough to cancel or delay school. Next week there is a good chance for a snow day, the first for the kids in Montgomery County.

Back to school
The last school districts to come back from Christmas break will do so tomorrow. This is one of the few things I miss about being in school. In the working world you are lucky to have a week off. I don’t mind since I will retire in a few years and have a much moreContinue reading “Back to school”
Less Drought
For the first time in well over a year, the entire county is out of extreme drought status. Most of the county is in moderate drought, with the northwest corner in severe drought. The streams still lack water and the spring is dry, but Caney, Kansas schools will have showers and regular toilets when theyContinue reading “Less Drought”
Mayor orders public bathrooms closed
In this week’s Montgomery County Chronicle, there was an article about Caney’s water crisis. On Monday the Mayor ordered all public bathrooms closed in Caney. The uproar from convenience stores and restaurants caused the order to be amended to restrict access to paying customers only. All of Montgomery County is under some mandatory water restriction.Continue reading “Mayor orders public bathrooms closed”
Headcount day for Kansas
Today is a big day for Kansas schools. The student count on this day determines the amount of state aid each school district gets. It also determines which class high school sports teams will compete in for the next two seasons. Locally, Caney Valley could drop from 3A to 2A. The only other area schoolContinue reading “Headcount day for Kansas”
Amazon days

Impressing the neighbors
At the bottled water company I worked at we had to change out the charcoal in the carbon filter roughly annually. This was an all day job and a messy one too, as we couldn’t avoid getting wet charcoal all over our uniforms. One year a teacher at the school next door shoved one ofContinue reading “Impressing the neighbors”
The sound of fall
My neighborhood is quiet. There is so little traffic that I can tell which of my neighbors is driving by my house when they are a half mile away. I can tell which delivery driver is going by too. But the most jarring sound in August is when the school bus goes by signaling theContinue reading “The sound of fall”
Fair season comes to an end
With school starting this week, fair season is coming to an end. Unfortunately Coffeyville’s Fair and Rodeo overlaps the beginning of the school year. The seven day fair ends Saturday. It always makes for an interesting first week of school.
Four day school week
In order to save money, some local schools are going to a four day school week. Both Kansas and Oklahoma mandate a certain number of hours rather than days so the four day week is possible if each school day is longer than normal. Altoona-Midway is trying it this year choosing a Monday through ThursdayContinue reading “Four day school week”
