Halfway through round three of the 2023 AFL season, Gold Coast and Geelong find themselves holding the bottom two spots on the AFL ladder. They play each other in a few hours, the losers all but certain to hold the dreaded wooden spoon.

AFL turned upside down
For only the third time in the 126 year history of the AFL the defending premiers are 0-2 and the wooden spoon team is 2-0.
Cats choke
Geelong lost to Collingwood this morning 125-103 after leading at quarter time, half time and three quarter time. Collingwood scored five goals and gave up none in the fourth quarter. This season could get ugly.
Signs of Spring
I have got a lot of chores to do to get ready for spring. I feel a personal day is coming up real soon. Time to plant the early garden stuff and do a serious decluttering of the house. The AFL season started this morning. The Cats start tomorrow morning against up and coming Collingwood.Continue reading “Signs of Spring”
Ten days to bounce down
Just over a week until the AFL starts its home and away season. With a sixteen team league, the preseason would have been a knockdown tournament. Winners got to play in better stadiums, while losers had to play in the bush. With the expansion to eighteen teams, the league tried various formats, finally devolving toContinue reading “Ten days to bounce down”
Lions Maul Cats
With the AFL reducing the preseason in recent years, I haven’t been paying attention in recent years. Hopefully the Cats get their act together before the season starts in 12 days.

Among the head coaches are his twin brother Chris at current premiers Geelong, Craig McRae of Collingwood, the AFL coach of the year, and three time premiershipContinue reading “Talent where you are not looking”
Cats smoke Swans
Geelong won the AFL Grand Final 133-52. Captain Joel Selwood becomes the first Cat to be a quadruple premiership player. Coach Chris Scott gets his 200th win. The Norm Smith medal goes to Isaac Smith (no relationship). After some early game nerves, Tom Hawkins scored the first two goals for the Cats. After Sydney gotContinue reading “Cats smoke Swans”
Swans down Pies in thriller.
Sydney beat Collingwood 95-94 in the other AFL preliminary final. The Swans led 88-62 at three quarter time and withstood a furious comeback in the last five minutes. Geelong has never met Sydney in a Grand Final.
Cats stomp Lions
Geelong crushed Bribane 120-49 to advance to next Friday night’s AFL Grand Final. Collingwood plays Sydney for the other Grand Final berth. A Collingwood win would not only be a rematch of the qualifying Final, but the 2011 Grand Final. Collingwood only lost three games that year, all to Geelong, including the Grand Final.
