Almost all of Kansas and Oklahoma are not in any drought status according to droughtmonitor.unl.edu. Unfortunately I am in the one area that drought status hasn’t changed in over two months. Most of the county is under moderate drought status, with the extreme western part under severe drought.

Snow last night, gone today
I got off work this morning and the roads were clear and wet. As I drove south towards home there was more and more snow stuck to the ground, but none on the road. It wasn’t like the county put sand or salt on the road. The temperature on the asphalt was just above freezing.Continue reading “Snow last night, gone today”
It ain’t over just yet..
…but the drought is diminishing. Caney Valley schools go back to a 5 day school week next week. The empty stream beds have water but it is not flowing yet. The spring near my house is flowing at about half a gallon a minute. No local government has declared an end to the drought emergency,Continue reading “It ain’t over just yet..”
Less Drought
For the first time in well over a year, the entire county is out of extreme drought status. Most of the county is in moderate drought, with the northwest corner in severe drought. The streams still lack water and the spring is dry, but Caney, Kansas schools will have showers and regular toilets when theyContinue reading “Less Drought”
Wet Christmas
It has rained all day and will do so into tomorrow morning. After that, it will go back to seasonal weather with highs in the 40s and lows just below freezing. There may be a lot of water on the ground, but none of it has reached our stream and creek beds yet. Time toContinue reading “Wet Christmas”
Warm autumn
After the trace of snow we had three weeks ago it has been unseasonably warm and dry since. Even in the morning there is barely any frost on the windshield. We really need a white Christmas to get out of our current drought status but at least it is likely to be a wet one.
Snowvember
We were expecting a trace of snow but not expecting it to stick. This morning when I got off work I was surprised to find it had stuck to the roads. By the time I got home the roads were absolutely clear but the fields were not. The snow should melt today or tomorrow notContinue reading “Snowvember”
Mayor orders public bathrooms closed
In this week’s Montgomery County Chronicle, there was an article about Caney’s water crisis. On Monday the Mayor ordered all public bathrooms closed in Caney. The uproar from convenience stores and restaurants caused the order to be amended to restrict access to paying customers only. All of Montgomery County is under some mandatory water restriction.Continue reading “Mayor orders public bathrooms closed”
Rain too little too late
Along with cooling temperatures comes the rain. We got over half an inch this week and will get another tonight. Unfortunately most of the corn crops have burnt up and the soybeans aren’t doing much better?
Missed it by that much
For the second time this week it rained at work but I got none at home. It is supposed to rain twice next week. Hopefully the storm track will drop about ten miles.
