According to droughtmonitor.unl.edu my place and most of Montgomery County are finally experiencing an extreme drought after eight weeks of exceptional drought status. For the first time since July there is green grass in the fields. It is raining and more rain is on the way. Maybe we can get to severe drought status byContinue reading “No longer exceptional, just extreme”

Last gasp of summer, really
The weather last week has been pleasant. You needed a jacket for morning’s and a t-shirt the rest of the day. That changes dramatically tomorrow afternoon when temperatures will drop to freezing by Friday. The long range forecast calls for highs below 50 and lows below freezing, in other words normal November weather. We areContinue reading “Last gasp of summer, really”
Rain has arrived
It looks like we may have gotten an inch of rain today. I slept through most of it. We may get more later this week. It may even be enough to lower our drought status from D4 (exceptional drought) to D3 (extreme drought). Regardless, it should help farmers with their winter wheat crop.
The garlic has landed
I got my garlic cloves from Territorial today about two weeks after Southern Exposure sent theirs. This was good timing with the inch of rain we got today. That was as much rain as we got in the last three months. My weekend starts tomorrow so I know what I will be doing
Maybe enough rain
We got more rain last night and this morning. Nowhere near enough to move us up the drought scale, but enough to get local wheat farmers to think about planting wheat later this month. It is also enough for me to plant garlic and walking onions tomorrow.
Rain at last
After looking at the possibility of 0 for October, it finally rained this evening. It wasn’t much, but combined with what is expected through Wednesday, I might be able to avoid watering my plants one day this week. Over the last month we anticipated rain only to just miss as the storm would move northContinue reading “Rain at last”
Rain is not helpful
A few inches of rain in the next month might help the wheat farmers get their crop planted, but the drought is so bad that we need winter snow. We need feet of snow and it needs to melt slowly to fill the streams, most of which are completely dry.
No rain this week either
There is a modest chance of rain next week, but at least we have fall weather with cooler temperatures. With less need for water, maybe we can extend our water supplies. At this point we don’t need rain, we need snow this winter. Snow that is wet and melts slowly will be preferred.
Drought is official
Coffeyville city commissoners have declared a drought watch, which asks people to use less water and allows it to draw water from other sources. Coffeyville also supplies water to Dearing, South Coffeyville , and the rural water districts surrounding them. It goes into effect Saturday upon publication in the official newspaper, the Urinal. Meanwhile CaneyContinue reading “Drought is official”
