You know people are hurting when they aren’t buying groceries at Walmart. Our holiday displays are in the backroom waiting to be put up. Unfortunately there is a lot of summer groceries that didn’t sell so well, so there is some serious clearance sales. Red, white and blue M&Ms were half off at 6 dollars.Continue reading “Ain’t buying it”

Time to fire up the grill
With ideal weather for the next few days and my weekend starting tomorrow morning, I am going to fire up the grill. Last year’s quarter cow is just over half eaten and I need to make room for a half a hog. Hogs are hard to find after fair season ends this weekend, so IContinue reading “Time to fire up the grill”
Clearing out the freezer
I am ordering a half a hog this year. Unfortunately there are no farmers raising feeder pigs around here. The only source of pigs are the 4-H kids. County fair season ends in a month, so I will have to get delivery no later than Labor Day. I don’t have a lot of frezzer spaceContinue reading “Clearing out the freezer”
No news(papers)
I went to Ottawa, Kansas yesterday and tried to get the local papers. Ten years ago I got the Kansas City Star, Lawrence Journal-World, Topeka Capitol-Journal, and the Ottawa rag, all of which were dailies. I went to three convenience stores and not one of them sold newspapers. They didn’t sell sandwiches either. Ironically WalmartContinue reading “No news(papers)”
Planting Time
After a couple of days of frost earlier this week, I decided to get started planting peppers and okra in the greenhouse. I will put some arugula in the container beds tomorrow.
Spring is coming soon
Today is cold and tonight will be colder. After tomorrow, the weather should stay warm for quite a while. Fortunately I just used the last of the stew meat and the carrots to make the winter’s last batch of beef stew. On to grilling season!
Super Bore, Part two
I mentioned the big football game that will be played in six days without mentioning the name of the game. Some businesses beat around the bush trying to tie in to the game and sell more stuff even though they are not No Fun League partners, thus not allowed to mention the name of theContinue reading “Super Bore, Part two”
Food inflation takes a breather
The after Christmas sale is on. Not only is Christmas candy on sale, but turkeys and hams are on rollback as well. Even better in Kansas, Sunday the sales tax on groceries goes down from 6.65% to 4.65%. Of course most places that sell food are in towns that add 3% to that. Hopefully theContinue reading “Food inflation takes a breather”
Taming the beast
I had to go to Wally World in Coffeyville to get a new phone. When I leave work at Indy, there is no one in electronics to unlock the cabinet with the cell phones. I almost got out of Walmart with the phone when the smell of Buffalo Wings got the best of me. IContinue reading “Taming the beast”
Pizza overload
Walmart tried to give us Christmas dinner this week. Unfortunately caterers are few and far between in rural Kansas and simply not available at this time of year. Fortunately Domino’s recently opened a store in Independence. For the last two days most of the overnight shift pigged out on pizza. With the cold snap IContinue reading “Pizza overload”
