I had a shipment of seeds due to come in today, but they are stuck in the postal system. At least the rain held off until the mailman went by. I got to get some seeds in the starter trays this weekend, which for me begins on Tuesday.

Seed starting starts now
I just got a large seed order from Territorial today. My Baker Creek order arrives tomorrow. Now is the time to prepare for both indoor and outdoor starts. With the temperature in the 60s and lows well above freezing. I might not even have to put the cover on my raised beds for a week.Continue reading “Seed starting starts now”
Feeling inadequate
Due to the warmer weather, I am digging up the last of the potatoes today. Meanwhile in France, the French farmers are digging up the highways leading to Paris. They are not planting potatoes or much of anything else. I hope French officials remember what happened the last time they pissed on and pissed offContinue reading “Feeling inadequate”
Persephone Days have ended
Persephone days ended on Sunday. I just got my first seed order delivered today from Johnny’s. Johnny’s is based in Maine and specializes in season extending crops and accessories. I will have to go through the boxes and get to growing seeds indoors. Not entirely by coincidence, the weather has let up after a weekContinue reading “Persephone Days have ended”
Don’t fill my breakfast bowl with bullsh1t
I think I am going to try to have honeybees this year so I went to a meeting of the local beekeepers association. Some one commented on my Geelong Cats hoodie I wore to the meeting, mentioning he had been in GEE-long. I can understand seppos mispronuncing juh-LONG, but if you had really been anywhereContinue reading “Don’t fill my breakfast bowl with bullsh1t”
Winter is coming
The long range forecast shows temperatures dropping into the single digits next weekend. The plant overwintering project is over as my greens will not survive. I see salads in my immediate future.
Finishing the garden up.
Sorry I haven’t posted for a month. I figure no one is reading it, so it wasn’t a big deal. I am trying to overwinter my pepper plants, so I severely trimmed them back and harvested the very last of the peppers and a stray okra Tuesday. The timing was nearly perfect because it wasContinue reading “Finishing the garden up.”
Jack Frost is coming soon
Today will be the last warm day for quite a while. Tomorrow morning I will have to bring in the peppers and the okra because by Sunday morning it should be below freezing. By Wednesday the low should be around 20 degrees, too cold for covers to work although I might be able to saveContinue reading “Jack Frost is coming soon”
Bringing in the peppers
On average, tonight should be the first frost of the season. The weather forecast calls for temperatures to stay above freezing for the next week. After that, I am not taking any chances.
The other drought monitor
The website droughtmonitor.unl.edu is one way to tell if the local area is in drought mode. Another is to check the local spring about fifty yards from my house. The flow rate varies widely and has been known to dry up completely. This morning I went to fill a jug for my container plants. TheContinue reading “The other drought monitor”
