Except for Cherryvale, whose seniors graduated last week, today was the last day of school for seniors in the area. It gets a bit awkward for those seniors still involved in sports. The playoffs and regional track meets are next week, with state championships the following week. Since the seniors are no longer students, afterContinue reading “Last day for seniors”

It seems like the school year just started yesterday. Graduations start tomorrow and run through next weekend. Community Colleges end their school year today and most high schools end in two weeks. For the kids playing spring sports it may be an additional week if their teams make the state playoffs. Enjoy your time inContinue reading “Graduation season”

The story of how Mason Cox went from high school soccer goalie in Texas to working out with the Oklahoma State women’s basketball team to playing for the men’s team to the AFL has to be seen to be believed. You all will get your chance tomorrow night.
Chanute girls grapple their way to state championship
Chanute, which didn’t even have a girls wrestling team four years ago, came out of nowhere to win the 1A-4A state wrestling championship. The Blue Comets sent five girls to the state tournament. While neither of their finalists won, the losers piled up so many points in the consolation bracket that they clinched the teamContinue reading “Chanute girls grapple their way to state championship”
Jets win, host St.Paul Friday
Since ending their seven year losing streak five years ago, the Altoona-Midway boys basketball team has been competitive. After last night’s upset of Jayhawk-Linn, they will host a playoff game for the third time. Unlike previous years, they will get a week off before hosting St.Paul. The winner will play Lebo, the only team inContinue reading “Jets win, host St.Paul Friday”
Winner
I went to watch Altoona-Midway’s homecoming game tonight. Girls got smoked 62-11. Boys got on the right end of a running clock and won 63-33. Whenever the margin in a basketball game gets to 30 points after the third quarter, the clock does not stop except for timeouts and technical fouls. I won the 50/50Continue reading “Winner”
High School Bowling
Bowling is a high school sport in Kansas. Most of the schools that have bowling teams are large urban schools. This year Chanute started a bowling team. I just can’t wrap my head around a rural school having a bowling team. Finding a bowling alley is hard and has gotten harder in the last tenContinue reading “High School Bowling”

It is high school basketball tournament week in Kansas and Oklahoma this week. For the first time Altoona-Midway is hosting a basketball tournament. The Milburn Apt tournament is named after the most famous person from the area, an Air Force pilot who became the first person to fly Mach 3. He did so for lessContinue reading “Tournament Week”
Back to school
Most schools in Kansas reopen tonight High school basketball also restarts tonight. At Altoona-Midway the teachers have to come in, but the students don’t have to be there until tomorrow. It will make tonight’s basketball game interesting. At least it is a home game.
High School basketball starts tonight
High schools in Kansas and Oklahoma begin basketball season tonight. I need sleep before I go into work tonight, so I will not be at any of them. Last night was a long night. Five people called in and another walked out early in the shift. In addition we have eight vacant positions and onlyContinue reading “High School basketball starts tonight”
