Today marks the anniversary of the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the Constitution. As bad as government has been lately, it would be a lot worse if the Bill of Rights did not exist.

I voted
I had to get my tire fixed, so I went to my polling place in mid day hoping the lines at the polls and the tire shop would be short. The good news is I was first in line at both places. About a dozen precincts are in the same building, each with its ownContinue reading “I voted”
Colliwobbles and pollyticks
If there are two organizations that can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory they are the Collingwood Football Club and the Republican Party. I got a warm fuzzy feeling watching The Final Draw video on You Tube and listening to Collingwood CEO Eddie McGuire recite every Collingwood Grand Final loss from 1958 to 2010.Continue reading “Colliwobbles and pollyticks”
Election garbage
After a slow start, election material finally arrived in my mailbox this week. Most of the races are not competitive, the issues not controversial and the candidates not wealthy. Even the dark money has been late getting into the game. The mailings have been worse than useless in influencing me and because of their glossyContinue reading “Election garbage”
All quiet on the political front
With less than three weeks to go until election day, there is not a whole lot of campaigning going on. There have been a few fliers in the mail, but not much else seems to be going on. It could be that way because most of the races have been decided and those that aren’tContinue reading “All quiet on the political front”
Hometown Boy Gets Slapped Down.
In the Kansas gubernatorial race, former Kansas Senator Nancy Kassebaum crossed party lines and endorsed incumbent Laura Kelly for Governor again. What makes this endorsement more newsworthy than her previous one? This time Kelly’s opponent is Attorney General Derek Schmidt, who is from Independence. Kassebaum’s father is former governor Alf Landon, who made his fortuneContinue reading “Hometown Boy Gets Slapped Down.”
Situational Unawareness
With all the stupidity in the world, it takes serious effort to be moron of the month. With over a week to go, here are August’s top contenders. Liz Cheney’s congressional reelection campaign was doomed for a variety of reasons. Daddy did a campaign commercial saying Donald Trump was the biggest threat to democracy. ThisContinue reading “Situational Unawareness”
Water shortage?!? update
With the entire county in severe drought status according to droughtmonitor.unl.edu, it was surprising that no water conservation measures were taken by any of our towns. This week Caney is asking residents to use less water until we get some serious rain. Caney’s water supply is the least stable in the county so I amContinue reading “Water shortage?!? update”
Dodging jury duty
I went to work last night and forgot I had jury duty today. If I had remembered, I could have called the jury hotline to find out if I had to appear. I had just enough time to get off work, go home, find my summons, and look online to see if I had toContinue reading “Dodging jury duty”
Election Day
Today was primary election day in Kansas. I got to vote in the primary today for the first time. I am still an independent voter, but there was a constitutional amendment on the ballot. I got to the polling place today and there was a line for my precinct, but not the other precincts. ThereContinue reading “Election Day”
