Kansas high school football ends the regular season this week. Most of the local teams are looking good heading for the playoffs. Coffeyville will open at home and if they beat 1-6 Fort Scott on Friday, they will host a second playoff game if they win the first. Caney is in a similar position asContinue reading “High School football ends this week.”

Frost Warning
The weather forecast calls for frost Wednesday morning. I may have to pull the pepper plants in for the night or cover them up depending on the severity. I am hoping just to cover them up since the week after calls for warm weather and Persephone Days don’t start for another month.
Maybe enough rain
We got more rain last night and this morning. Nowhere near enough to move us up the drought scale, but enough to get local wheat farmers to think about planting wheat later this month. It is also enough for me to plant garlic and walking onions tomorrow.
Hometown Boy Gets Slapped Down.
In the Kansas gubernatorial race, former Kansas Senator Nancy Kassebaum crossed party lines and endorsed incumbent Laura Kelly for Governor again. What makes this endorsement more newsworthy than her previous one? This time Kelly’s opponent is Attorney General Derek Schmidt, who is from Independence. Homecoming
Where I grew up,homecoming was in October. Here most schools have already had homecoming. When you only have an eight game regular season, the season ends in October. At least the weather cooled down enough to feel like homecoming in the last week.

Meanwhile CaneyContinue reading “Drought is official”
Spring has run dry
The spring near my house has completely run dry. Word hasn’t gotten out to everyone as I hear cars pull up on occasion.
Spring drying up
I haven’t been to the spring in over a week, but I haven’t heard anyone stop there. The spring is in the right of way well within hearing range,, but not within line of sight from my house. I went to get some water and found out why. The spring normally flows out of theContinue reading “Spring drying up”
No sign of drought letting up
The entire county has been in extreme drought status for three weeks. Last week Caney declared a drought emergency, banning most outdoor watering. Coffeyville is expected to do the same in the next month. There is little chance of rain in the next ten days and no chance of any rain helping.
Last gasp of summer weather
I took out my AC window unit last week. This week temperatures are going back into the 100s. This would not be so bad, but the lows are above 70 for most of the week. I don’t want to think about how bad things would be if I bad to deal with heat island effectContinue reading “Last gasp of summer weather”
