Five weeks after having no drought status, we have achieved severe drought status. Rain is expected tonight and tomorrow night, but we will be lucky to get back to moderate drought status by next week. At least the temperatures are below average until Tuesday and will be average for the foreseeable future.

Taking advantage of a break.
I was waiting for this break in the weather to transplant some pepper plants into bigger containers. Some were put into fresh containers and some replaced plants that have died during the heat wave. I think I will plant some okra in the grow trays to replace the peppers. We only got a trace ofContinue reading “Taking advantage of a break.”
Heat wave breaks
Starting today there will be five consecutive days of high temperatures below 100 degrees. With lows as low as the 60s, it is time to pull the window AC out and put the fans back in. I might even get a chance to ride the bike during the break.
Relief this week
Temperatures are still reaching the 100s, but the Weather Channel is calling for lower temperatures and rain this week. Highs could get down to the 60s by Friday. My garden is dying as we speak. It is not the daytime temperatures that are the problem as much as the lows that don’t drop below 80.Continue reading “Relief this week”
Jury Duty
I just got called for jury duty for the fifth time in 16 years. I called in twice and was told not to come in. I ignored the other two notices and never heard back. Thus I haven’t even made it to the jury assembly room, let alone served on a jury. In Phoenix, IContinue reading “Jury Duty”
It’s really summer
Fair season started last weekend. For the next month every town of any size has a fair. Most are modest affairs with the highlight being a rodeo and/or a demolition derby. The other part of summer, the heat wave, has arrived. According to the Weather Channel, the highs will be over 100 every day forContinue reading “It’s really summer”
Moving day part three and final.
We spent the next day in Coffeyville. I put up an extra ceiling fan in a bedroom and we rode bikes downtown and had lunch and rode around town. We got back and decided to leave for Eau Claire the next morning. We got to Iowa and my debit card would not work. I carriedContinue reading “Moving day part three and final.”
Moving, Part Two.
We left Santa Rosa, New Mexico early for the drive to Coffeyville. The trip was uneventful, even managing to avoid Tulsa rush hour traffic. We arrived in late afternoon and spent the next two hours unloading my stuff of the Uhaul. The sun was starting to set so roomier and I were on the porchContinue reading “Moving, Part Two.”
Moving Day Anniversary
Sixteen years ago today, I left Phoenix to move to Kansas. It was memorable for the last minute chaos. The City of Phoenix was buying my house and I chose July 11 as a closing date. The week before I quit my job at the PetSmart warehouse and closed on my house in Coffeyville. IContinue reading “Moving Day Anniversary”
Mask mania?
I have recently noticed more people wearing masks in the last two weeks. I see a half dozen a day where last month half a dozen days would go by before I saw someone with a mask on. No government official or medical professional has recommended wearing masks anywhere but hospitals and nursing homes. DoContinue reading “Mask mania?”
