This year is the 100th anniversary of Coffeyville Community College. Except for 1924 and during World War 2, CCC has had a football team for each of those seasons. In those early days colleges scheduled games against whoever they could find. In that inaugural season they played six games. Three were against high schools, oneContinue reading “CCC Centennial”

Sunflower State
Kansas is known for sunflowers. They are not evenly distributed throughout the state. Northern Kansas has fields of wild sunflowers, while in southeast Kansas they have been a rare sight. In the 15 years I have lived in my current house this is the first year sunflowers are growing in the right of ways. TheseContinue reading “Sunflower State”

High School football doubleheader
There has been quite a bit of talk about the shortage officials in high school sports, especially in football. Some areas in Kansas have had games rescheduled because of a shortage of officials, but not in southeast Kansas. Tonight presents a unique opportunity to watch two games in one day. Altoona-Midway hosts Chetopa in aContinue reading “High School football doubleheader”
Football kicks off
High School and college football kicks off this weekend. The high schools in the area had scrimmages last night. While most states have scrimmages, this has been a recent development in Kansas. Revival in the neighborhood
There are two abandoned churches is my neighborhood. One of them was an historically Black church where revivals were held until held until a decade ago. There will be a weekend revival this weekend. There was an article in this week’s Chronicle about the spiritual and structural revival of the church. This should be aContinue reading “Revival in the neighborhood”
Fair season comes to an end
With school starting this week, fair season is coming to an end. Unfortunately Coffeyville’s Fair and Rodeo overlaps the beginning of the school year. The seven day fair ends Saturday. It always makes for an interesting first week of school.
Four day school week
In order to save money, some local schools are going to a four day school week. Both Kansas and Oklahoma mandate a certain number of hours rather than days so the four day week is possible if each school day is longer than normal. Altoona-Midway is trying it this year choosing a Monday through ThursdayContinue reading “Four day school week”
Libraries without books
If you don’t visit a library very often, one of the things that may surprise you is the lack of books in it. I had to do some research at the Parsons and Independence libraries concerning the demise of our local daily newspapers. It was a shock to find very few shelves at the ParsonsContinue reading “Libraries without books”
Back to school
I grew up in an area that started the school year the day after Labor Day. It still is strange to me to see school start this week in some districts. By Monday every district will have started school. A few years ago the local media would remind people of the traffic laws in crosswalks.Continue reading “Back to school”
