The total compensation at Wally World isn’t too bad. What is abysmal is the holiday pay. Most people in the US get at least six paid holidays and nine or ten is becoming common. Retail and restaurants are the big exception. Paid holiday is a foreign phrase with no English translation. Wally World has twoContinue reading “Paid Holiday?”

Black Friday actually happened
This was my fourth Black Friday working at Wally World and the first that had people waiting for us to open up the store. We had about 100 people come through in the hour before I left. That was about as many as there were the three previous years combinec.
Dollar General Is Everywhere
I went to Bartlesville on a well overdue shopping trip today. I was about to go back when I realized I needed to pick up some snacks and cleaning supplies at Dollar General. I ended up at the one known locally as being in the middle of nowhere. It is just off of the highwayContinue reading “Dollar General Is Everywhere”
Long sleeve day
I rode the bike to work last night. When I rode back this morning, it was pleasantly chilly. Tonight a frost warning has been issued for the area. Local temperatures should stay above freezing, but it is time to wear long sleeves at work. It gets warm in the store I work at overnights. WeContinue reading “Long sleeve day”
Avoiding work
When I am not working at Wally World, I try to avoid the place. Unfortunately, when you have insurance from Walmart, Walmart is your drug dealer. My prescriptions are ready, so I will run a bunch of other errands that I otherwise would have delayed until next week when I get back from vacation. EvenContinue reading “Avoiding work”
Vacation Policies
When I first entered the workforce full time 40 some years ago most private employers had the same vacation policy. You got one or two weeks vacation each calendar year, pro-rated if you only worked part of a calendar year. You had to use it or lose it at the start of the next year.Continue reading “Vacation Policies”
Ain’t buying it
You know people are hurting when they aren’t buying groceries at Walmart. Our holiday displays are in the backroom waiting to be put up. Unfortunately there is a lot of summer groceries that didn’t sell so well, so there is some serious clearance sales. Red, white and blue M&Ms were half off at 6 dollars.Continue reading “Ain’t buying it”
Lying down on the job
My job can literally be a pain. Reaching up on the top shelf to bring boxes or cans is not so bad. Bending over to put things on lower shelves can be a bit awkward at times. But seeing what is in the back of the bottom shelf preventing you from stocking an item canContinue reading “Lying down on the job”
Weeding out the help again
The good news this holiday weekend is groceries are getting to the store. The bad news is we don’t have enough people to get them on the shelf. We lost yet another person this week. She had barely been here a month and in addition to missing several days managed to fall asleep at workContinue reading “Weeding out the help again”
More shrinkflation
When I got off work, I got some food for the upcoming Labor Day weekend. I get things I don’t normally buy such as ice cream. I noticed the packages shrank since the Independence Day holiday week. In the ancient times of the early 21st century, ice cream came in 2 quart packages. A fewContinue reading “More shrinkflation”
