With frost risk today and tomorrow, outdoor planting will have to wait a couple of days. Indoor starts will continue as normal with okra next on the agenda.

Greenhouse, we hardly knew you
Normally mid February is the time to set up the mini greenhouses to start seeds for March or April planting. With temperatures expected to be in the 70s for the indefinite future, I may have to skip the greenhouse altogether.
Planting outside
I took advantage of the warm spell and planted some oxheart carrots, wild arugula, and cherry Belle radishes in my raised beds under window covers. Tomorrow I will have to put the row covers on top because a cold front will move through, dropping low temperatures to the mid 20s. Planting
Planting Time
Tomorrow I will plant some frost tolerant crops in my raised beds. I am looking at Kale, Swiss chard, radishes and carrots. It may be time to start some seed onions in my west facing bedroom window. I already have almost as much as I can start in my south facing living room windows, soContinue reading “Planting Time”
Snow last night, gone today
I got off work this morning and the roads were clear and wet. As I drove south towards home there was more and more snow stuck to the ground, but none on the road. It wasn’t like the county put sand or salt on the road. The temperature on the asphalt was just above freezing.Continue reading “Snow last night, gone today”
Time to find my jacket
The heat wave that happened last weekend has disappeared and temperatures are back to normal. I may have to slip on a jacket, but temperatures are a lot nicer than two weeks ago. 30 degrees I can handle. Below 10 degrees, not so much.
No seeds, just rain
I had a shipment of seeds due to come in today, but they are stuck in the postal system. At least the rain held off until the mailman went by. I got to get some seeds in the starter trays this weekend, which for me begins on Tuesday.
Seed starting starts now
I just got a large seed order from Territorial today. My Baker Creek order arrives tomorrow. Now is the time to prepare for both indoor and outdoor starts. With the temperature in the 60s and lows well above freezing. I might not even have to put the cover on my raised beds for a week.Continue reading “Seed starting starts now”
My bike is calling me
The temperature has warmed up to 55 degrees today. This is ideal bicycling weather. The roads are wet so the potholes keep moving. There is not enough daylight to try to ride to work yet, but I can go to town on my days off this week.
Persephone Days have ended
Persephone days ended on Sunday. I just got my first seed order delivered today from Johnny’s. Johnny’s is based in Maine and specializes in season extending crops and accessories. I will have to go through the boxes and get to growing seeds indoors. Not entirely by coincidence, the weather has let up after a weekContinue reading “Persephone Days have ended”
