Spring has run dry
The spring near my house has completely run dry. Word hasn’t gotten out to everyone as I hear cars pull up on occasion.
Fall has arrived
Temperatures have finally fallen to the 80s with overnight lows in the 50s. It is time to plant fall crops in the overwinter beds. It is time to get on the bike as well.
Spring drying up
I haven’t been to the spring in over a week, but I haven’t heard anyone stop there. The spring is in the right of way well within hearing range,, but not within line of sight from my house. I went to get some water and found out why. The spring normally flows out of theContinue reading “Spring drying up”
No sign of drought letting up
The entire county has been in extreme drought status for three weeks. Last week Caney declared a drought emergency, banning most outdoor watering. Coffeyville is expected to do the same in the next month. There is little chance of rain in the next ten days and no chance of any rain helping.
Last gasp of summer weather
I took out my AC window unit last week. This week temperatures are going back into the 100s. This would not be so bad, but the lows are above 70 for most of the week. I don’t want to think about how bad things would be if I bad to deal with heat island effectContinue reading “Last gasp of summer weather”
Veggies finally producing
The cooler weather has allowed my okra, tomatoes and peppers to set. I should have something worth eating in the next two weeks. The beans have finally germinated and now the race to Persephone Day is on. I should get some of the early beans before growth stops, but it will be a small harvesr.
Fall cleaning
It has cooled off considerably the last two weeks, especially at night. Labor Day weekend means the start of fall cleaning, starting with taking the AC unit out of my bedroom window and putting the window fan in. Sometime between Halloween and Thanksgiving, I will have to close the windows for winter.
Hurry rain, hurry
The long term forecast calls for rain, maybe even enough to lower our drought status. The next three days are supposed to be sunny and cooler especially in the mornings. Tomorrow might be the last chance to ride the bike to work for a couple of weeks.
Water shortage?!? update
With the entire county in severe drought status according to droughtmonitor.unl.edu, it was surprising that no water conservation measures were taken by any of our towns. This week Caney is asking residents to use less water until we get some serious rain. Caney’s water supply is the least stable in the county so I amContinue reading “Water shortage?!? update”
