AKA deer left enough of my okra so I can finally pick some this weekend. As I have posted earlier, they turn their noses up at everything else in the garden to attack the okra. With some heat tolerant spinach and grape tomatoes, I have the beginning of a decent salad. With the recent coolingContinue reading “Four-letter, four-legged locusts…”

Cool breezes
I did some long overdue yard work today. The weather was better than it has been the last three months, with the high only reaching 80 degrees with a slight refreshing breeze. Tomorrow will be warmer, but the days off 100 degree temperatures are over. It is too warm to plant the winter garden, butContinue reading “Cool breezes”
Big storm, little rain.
A storm just came through this evening. It didn’t provide any rain, but it brought temperatures below 70 degrees. The long range forecast shows a lot of highs in the 80s. Another storm is coming overnight which could bring more rain.
Back to School
Some area schools started this week, the rest start Monday. Gatorade and juice sales are down this week at Wally World and it is not because the temperature has finally below 100 degrees either. I am ordering a quarter beef in November, so I bought a 7 cubic foot freezer to go along with theContinue reading “Back to School”
Water shortage? Not here.
With most of our area under severe drought status and the lack of rain over the past three months, water rationing plans would be announced. As of today no announcements have been made. Compare this to the Colorado River basin. Federal authorities have told the seven states along the river to come to an agreementContinue reading “Water shortage? Not here.”
Dodging raindrops
What little chance we had of rain this week has evaporated. There’s rain to the north and the south, but not here for the last month. At least the temperatures will drop a litt,e.
Not quite as hot
It is still hot, but it looks like the 100 degree days are done. It is fair and rodeo week in Coffeyville and it usually rains enough to ruin one night. Not this year during the worst drought since I moved here in 2006. We might get a tenth of an inch Tuesday. At leastContinue reading “Not quite as hot”
Election Day
Today was primary election day in Kansas. I got to vote in the primary today for the first time. I am still an independent voter, but there was a constitutional amendment on the ballot. I got to the polling place today and there was a line for my precinct, but not the other precincts. ThereContinue reading “Election Day”
Rain at last
We got about an inch of rain today. It’s not enough to add to my water storage, but at least I won’t have to worry about watering what’s left of my garden. Today felt like fall and if tomorrow is the same I might catch up on yard work.
Keep on droughting
Five weeks after having no drought status, we have achieved severe drought status. Rain is expected tonight and tomorrow night, but we will be lucky to get back to moderate drought status by next week. At least the temperatures are below average until Tuesday and will be average for the foreseeable future.
