I got my garlic cloves from Territorial today about two weeks after Southern Exposure sent theirs. This was good timing with the inch of rain we got today. That was as much rain as we got in the last three months. My weekend starts tomorrow so I know what I will be doing

Heat ripple
After this morning’s hard freeze that killed everything not under cover and some things that were, temperatures will climb back to the 80s for a few days. A much needed rain should bring temperatures back to the 70s. I will put the peppers back outside for now. Hopefully they can still grow enough to eatContinue reading “Heat ripple”
Cold snap
It did dip below freezing this morning, but there was no frost. That will not be the case tonight as the temperature is already below freezing and will stay that way until 10am the next morning. I brought in most of my plants and covered up the ones that were worth saving.
Planting garlic
I will have to plant the garlic and walking onions tomorrow. There was going to be a short window between getting some much needed moisture and the first freeze of the year. It rained Thursday and Friday and Wednesday morning the low will be 20 degrees.
Frost Warning
The weather forecast calls for frost Wednesday morning. I may have to pull the pepper plants in for the night or cover them up depending on the severity. I am hoping just to cover them up since the week after calls for warm weather and Persephone Days don’t start for another month.
Maybe enough rain
We got more rain last night and this morning. Nowhere near enough to move us up the drought scale, but enough to get local wheat farmers to think about planting wheat later this month. It is also enough for me to plant garlic and walking onions tomorrow.
Rain at last
After looking at the possibility of 0 for October, it finally rained this evening. It wasn’t much, but combined with what is expected through Wednesday, I might be able to avoid watering my plants one day this week. Over the last month we anticipated rain only to just miss as the storm would move northContinue reading “Rain at last”
Cool Breeze
The days still get warm, but I need to wear long sleeved shirts in the morning. Even a gentle breeze makes it feel like it is freezing when I get off work.. The problem is the store is too warm all night when I work. In a few weeks the store will be cool. ByContinue reading “Cool Breeze”
Rain is not helpful
A few inches of rain in the next month might help the wheat farmers get their crop planted, but the drought is so bad that we need winter snow. We need feet of snow and it needs to melt slowly to fill the streams, most of which are completely dry.
No rain this week either
There is a modest chance of rain next week, but at least we have fall weather with cooler temperatures. With less need for water, maybe we can extend our water supplies. At this point we don’t need rain, we need snow this winter. Snow that is wet and melts slowly will be preferred.
