The good news this holiday weekend is groceries are getting to the store. The bad news is we don’t have enough people to get them on the shelf. We lost yet another person this week. She had barely been here a month and in addition to missing several days managed to fall asleep at workContinue reading “Weeding out the help again”

Holidays are here
At Wally World we put up the holiday grocery display in the aisle this week. This is where most of the pumpkin spice stuff is going to be from now until Easter. They couldn’t even wait until Labor Day this year.
Job Fair Friday
The soybean oil plant is holding a job fair Friday and Saturday. With a starting wage of $20/hour all five sessions should be busy. They are looking to hire 50 people and will have to go through 500 suspects to get to 150 prospects to interview. Hardly anyone not in skilled trades makes $20/hour aroundContinue reading “Job Fair Friday”
Gossip rags are back
After disappearing for two months, the Globe and National Enquirer are back on the shelves of the local supermarkets. Except for the hole they left in the racks by the checkout stands, I don’t think anybody noticed. Customers do notice when the snacks are not stocked there. People will go in those aisles to buyContinue reading “Gossip rags are back”
Polishing up the resume
With the new soybean processing plant opening up next year, people are polishing up their resumes. I will be among them. For $4.50 an hour I have to at least look into it. The company is holding a job fair in early August and they want resumes.. I never made a resume before 2020 andContinue reading “Polishing up the resume”
Odd jobs
As I wind down my working years, I have been looking back at some of the odd jobs I have had over the years. Side hustles are not anything new among working class people with a high school education like me. Recent college graduates seem to think they have discovered moonlighting. I hate to giveContinue reading “Odd jobs”
Cabinet Maker Blues
For some reason cabinet companies are among the poorest paying places to work. The pay is low, the working conditions lower, and the risk of injury is higher than average. The industry is known for cutting corners in more ways than one. When I lived in Phoenix one of my neighbors got a job asContinue reading “Cabinet Maker Blues”
Independence Day
Since hardly anyone has a public display of fireworks today, I decided to shoot off a few of my own. Since I work in retail, I rarely get a holiday off. In fact, this is the first time I have had Independence night off since I started working for Wally World. It will be theContinue reading “Independence Day”
Taking care of the help
I have posted several times on this blog about employees not wanting to work. They may be lazy, but the way some employers have treated the help in the past haven’t encouraged a work ethic. My first job in Kansas was loading cabinets at a cabinet company in Neodesha, about 30 miles from my house.Continue reading “Taking care of the help”
Showing up is half the battle….
….staying until the job is done is the other half. Last night at work someone went home early because of a toothache. This is starting to become a problem. At least last night we had enough people to get the job done. I am starting to worry about the resilience of the younger generations. WhenContinue reading “Showing up is half the battle….”
