Mask mania?

I have recently noticed more people wearing masks in the last two weeks. I see a half dozen a day where last month half a dozen days would go by before I saw someone with a mask on. No government official or medical professional has recommended wearing masks anywhere but hospitals and nursing homes. Do lay people know something the professionals are missing?
